​We are​ seeking individuals to assist in working at Vote Centers throughout the County.  ​Volunteers are also needed to close Official Ballot Drop Boxes and securely transport ballots to the Elections Office after the polls close on Election Day.

To work the election, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years of age OR be a high school student that is at least 16 years of age and in good academic standing
  • A resident of the State of California
  • Be able to read and write in fluent English
  • Attend mandatory training classes prior to each election 
  • Have access to transportation

Election Officer Positions

Inspectors 

Receive $18.17 an hour and be available to start working at a Vote Center starting 10 days before Election Day. Inspectors are the leaders/supervisors of the Vote Center and are assigned Clerks. They are responsible for knowing how to operate the Vote Center equipment, communicate ​regularly with the Elections office, and ensure all procedures are being followed.

  • Receive and check election supplies 
  • Prepare, open, maintain and close the Vote Center each day
  • Enforce and follow state and federal laws by performing tasks as instructed
  • Ensure equipment is set-up and operated properly 
  • Assign tasks and breaks
  • Issue and receive official ballots from the voters
  • ​Return ballots and supplies to assigned drop-off site nightly
  • Attend mandatory training classes at the Sacramento County Voter Registration & Elections office

Clerks 

Receive $16.00 an hour and can have more of a flexible schedule, including only being able to work on Election Day. A clerk works under the direction of the Inspector.

  • Prepare, open, maintain and close the Vote Center each day
  • Enforce and follow state and federal laws by performing tasks as instructed
  • Issue and receive official ballots from the voters
  • Attend mandatory training classes at the Sacramento County Voter Registration & Elections office

​High School Students

If you are 16 or 17 years of age and want to work at a Vote Center to earn some extra cash and receive community service hours, download and complete this application. Make sure your parent or guardian signs the application, then mail or scan and email to precinctoperations@saccounty.gov.

Official Ballot Drop Box Closers

In teams of two (a driver and a passenger), these volunteers receive a stipend of $75 to travel to an assigned Official Ballot Drop Box on Election Day, lock the box at closing time, and​ securely transport the ballots to your designated location. Mileage will be reimbursed at the current rate established by the County of Sacramento. 

  • ​​Close Official Ballot Drop Boxes at various locations throughout Sacramento County and securely transport ballots to your designated location​
  • Enforce and follow state and federal laws by performing tasks as instructed and follow proper security procedures
  • Driver must possess a valid California Driver's License and use a personal vehicle with proof of insurance 
  • Watch a mandatory training video and ask questions regarding procedures prior to arrival on Election Day

Are You A County Employee? Consider Joining VOTES Corps!

VOTES Corps (Volunteer Officials Trained for Election Support) is a service program for regular employees of the County of Sacramento.​

The mission of VOTES Corps is to encourage partnership between volunteer civil servants and local election administrators in the spirit of civic duty. Members of VOTES Corps will be appointed, trained, and certified biennially. Certified members of VOTES Corps will be eligible for Election Day assignments. They will primarily be called upon to assist in​ providing secure ballot transport on Election Day. They will not be assigned to work as Vote Center Inspectors or Clerks.
