Current Recall Information
Recall is the power of the voters to remove elected officials before their terms expire. It has been part of our governmental system since 1911. Voters use recall when they wish to express their dissatisfaction with elected representatives.
The California Constitution defines recall as, “the power of the electors to remove an elective officer". Neither the California Constitution nor the Elections Code says under what circumstances recall is justified. Instead, it says that the reason is not reviewable.
For information on how to recall local officeholders, please review and read the Guide to Recall. A “local officer" is an elected officer of a county, school district, community college district, or special district, or a judge of a trial court.
